Dream Adventures — Expedia × St. Jude

A six-sided immersive room that brought live 360° travel to children who couldn’t leave the hospital. Software and space, built in two weeks. The campaign earned four Cannes Lions.

Children being treated at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital couldn’t travel — so Expedia and 180LA set out to bring travel to them. Expedia sent employees with 360° cameras and live-streaming rigs to destinations the children chose, and beamed the footage, live, into an immersive room at the hospital.

What we built

Pixel Rain built the real-time software pipeline and the physical room. Live 360° camera feeds were wrapped around a sphere in software, translated into a four-camera projection, and mapped across the walls, floor, and ceiling of a six-sided immersive space — surrounding each child in the destination as it happened, in real time. It was the first time 360° filming, projection mapping, and live streaming were combined into a single live experience. We delivered the whole thing — pipeline and build — in a two-week sprint.

The destinations

Four children, each matched to a dream: running with wild horses in Córdoba and Talampaya, Argentina; playing with monkeys at Monkey Jungle in Miami; swimming the Great Maya Reef in Playa del Carmen; and a dinosaur fossil dig.
